Team Members

How member roles work and how the last owner of an organization is protected.

Overview

Every organization is made up of members, and each member has a role that controls what they can do. You manage members from Settings → Members, where owners and admins can change a member's role or remove someone from the organization.

RoleWhat it can do
OwnerFull control of the organization, including billing and managing every member.
AdminManage members and most settings.
MemberDay-to-day access without member management.

Changing a Member's Role

Go to Settings → Members for your organization.

Find the person in the list and pick a new role from the selector next to their name.

The change applies immediately and is recorded in your organization's activity log.

The Last Owner Is Always Protected

An organization must always have at least one owner, so there is always someone with full control. This leads to one simple rule:

  • While there are two or more owners, any of them can be demoted to Admin or Member, or removed from the organization.
  • When only one owner remains, that last owner can't be demoted or removed. The options are disabled, with a short note explaining why.

The protection is about the number of owners, not a specific person. The same owner can be demoted at one moment (because another owner exists) and protected at another (once they become the last one). To free up the last owner, promote someone else to Owner first — the demote and remove options become available again right away.

This rule is enforced wherever members are managed, so the organization can never be left without an owner.
